Essential FAQs About Goldendoodle Puppies

Bringing a Goldendoodle puppy into your home comes with many questions and considerations. Whether you’re curious about their grooming needs, exercise requirements or suitability as family pets, we’ve compiled advice and insights based on our 20 years of experience to help guide you through becoming a Goldendoodle owner.

A Goldendoodle is a crossbreed between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, known for their friendly demeanor, intelligence and allergy-friendly coats. The Goldendoodle puppies at Sunshine Acres have a purebred Poodle sire and either a purebred Golden Retriever or a hybrid Golden Retriever/Irish Setter dam for our Irish Goldendoodle puppies.

While the difference between F1 Goldendoodle puppies and F1B Goldendoodle puppies lies in their genetic makeup, both of these combinations have the predictability of their parents’ traits while preserving the greatest amount of hybrid vigor.

  • F1 Goldendoodles are the first generation hybrids, resulting from breeding a purebred Golden Retriever with a purebred Poodle. This mix results in puppies that are 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Poodle. Our F1 Goldendoodles usually have a wavy to slightly curly coat type and are non-shedding.  Our F1 Irish Goldendoodle puppies are also a first-generation hybrid mix and are bred between a Golden Retriever-Irish Setter hybrid and a purebred Poodle. Their coats are typically also wavy to slightly curly and non-shedding.
  • F1B Goldendoodles are a first-generation backcross, where an F1 Goldendoodle is bred back to a purebred Poodle, making the puppies 25% Golden Retriever and 75% Poodle. This backcross is designed to enhance the hypoallergenic characteristics of the breed, making an F1B Goldendoodle a better choice for families with significant dog allergies. In a litter of F1B Goldendoodle puppies, about half of the litter will have a wavy or slightly curly coat, similar to an F1 Goldendoodle, and half will have a curly coat, similar to a purebred poodle.

Due to the inconsistency of the puppies, we do not raise or support the breeding of multigenerational Goldendoodles. A multi-gen Goldendoodle can shed as much as a purebred Golden or be as hypoallergenic and non-shedding as a purebred poodle.  They are a genetic unknown with inconsistent coat types and personalities.

Goldendoodles require regular grooming to maintain their coat’s health and prevent matting. A Goldendoodle with a wavy coat will need less brushing than one who has a curly coat type. The grooming frequency depends on their coat type, with daily brushing recommended for a curly-coated Goldendoodle and weekly brushing needed for a wavy-coated Goldendoodle

Goldendoodles generally have an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Proper nutrition, regular exercise and routine veterinary care can help ensure that your Goldendoodle lives a full, healthy life.

Yes, Goldendoodles are high-energy dogs that thrive on regular exercise. Adult Goldendoodles typically need at least 60 minutes of activity daily, while puppies require several short sessions of play and walks.

While no dog breed is completely hypoallergenic, Goldendoodles with more Poodle-like coats may be less likely to trigger allergies in sensitive individuals. However, individual reactions can vary. If your family has dog allergies, schedule a visit to meet your favorite of our allergy-friendly puppies, and we will help you do an allergy test.  Many families with general allergies or dog allergies have done well with our F1 Goldendoodle puppies.

Goldendoodles can be as small as 15 pounds or as large as 80+ pounds as adults, depending on the size of their parents.  This wide range of Goldendoodle sizes is usually categorized as petite, miniature, medium and standard.

  • A petite Goldendoodle is the smallest size and usually grows to less than 25 pounds as an adult and usually measures less than 15 inches tall to their shoulder height
  • A miniature Goldendoodle is usually 26 to 35 pounds as an adult and measures 15-17 inches tall to their shoulder height
  • A medium Goldendoodles will typically grow to 36-50 pounds and measure 17-21 inches tall to their shoulder height
  • A standard-size Goldendoodle will be the largest size, commonly over 50 pounds and are over 21 inches tall to their shoulder height

We specialize in medium and small standard-size Goldendoodle puppies. We occasionally have the miniature size Goldendoodle puppies as well. The majority of our puppies fall in the 40 to 55-pound size range as adults, with some litters having both medium and standard-size puppies in them. Our smallest puppies will be 30-35 pounds as adults, and the largest will be up to 70 pounds as adults. Usually our Goldendoodle puppies’ adult size will be between their two parents’ weights, with the largest puppies in the litter potentially growing up to 10 pounds larger than their biggest parent. A puppy’s height at the shoulder as an adult will typically fall between their two parents’ heights.
