Why A Sunshine Acres Goldendoodle

The Mission

To provide a healthy, intelligent, sweet-natured Goldendoodle puppy that is supreme at making families laugh together, give individuals devotion and companionship, and reduce the effects of dog allergies.

The Philosophy

This fun-loving dog has been the object of many newspaper articles, Animal Planet, and various talk shows.  Most people that are buying Doodlepuppy Goldendoodles are looking for a Golden Retriever with a lot less shedding hair.  In addition to good hair qualities, the Doodlepuppy Goldendoodle is also a wonderful family companion, they are highly intelligent, and they are very trainable.  That is the lovable Doodlepuppy Goldendoodle in a nutshell.

Our Beginning

Although Michael grew up on a family farm in Iowa, and was involved in Agriculture, his first experience with genetics was in his undergraduate research with Dr. Walt Fehr’s soybean breeding.  Genetics quickly became an interest to Michael in this work.  In 2000 he located on a rural acreage at our present location near Wolcott, Indiana.  It was then the Doodle dream was conceived and began to materialize.  At this time, there were very few hybrid breeds of dogs available, as the majority of breeders focused only on purebred breeds.  Michael’s interest in genetics led to him deciding to raise a family pet and therapy dog from lines that had been strictly selected for good health, outstanding temperament and trainability that was not a purebred, but a hybrid.  Interestingly, at this time, there were very few Doodle breeders in the U.S, especially in the mid-west.  Few people had ever heard of a “Doodle”.  Michael began to research parent lines, and acquired his first Doodle mother in 2000.  So Sunshine Acres was born, and along with it our first much anticipated and carefully planned for litter of  puppies.  Over the course of the next several years, we carefully selected our Golden Retriever, Irish Setter and Poodle parents from good, healthy lines that were solid in temperament and had coat type and coloring we were looking for.   We have found the Goldendoodles to be a well balanced, tender hearted, warm, wonderful breed that we love to work with.  After years of carefully selecting and breeding our own lines, our Goldendoodle puppies have developed a distinct “Sunshine Acres” look that sets them apart from many other Goldendoodles.  Through experience we have learned which lines make exceptional “Doodle” parents.

About Sunshine Acres

Sunshine Acres has been raising the Goldendoodle since 2002.  Our Goldendoodle puppies are socialized in a family setting following techniques taught by Jan Fennell, The Dog Listener. We own both of our puppies parents, and in most cases, owned their grandparents and great-grandparents as well. Each of our puppies come with a three year health guarantee and a puppy care package.  They are current on their vaccinations and have been given the best of preventative veterinary care.

Raising Goldendoodles is our family project, as well as a family love.   Our Goldendoodle puppies are socialized with our children and handled individually every day as we know how the trainability and intelligence of a puppy is directly linked to what their early exposures and imprinting have been. Our children and the puppies enjoy interacting with one another.  Since Michael has completed Jan Fennel’s Foundation Course in Canine Communication, our Goldendoodle puppies are socialized according to Jan Fennel, The Dog Listener’s techniques in a family setting.

Here at Sunshine Acres, our family strives to continually improving the health, genetics, and quality of our parent lines, and is actively involved in breeder education.  We are committed to responsible breeding practices, and are equally dedicated to educating our Goldendoodle puppies’ new families about responsible dog ownership.    If you would like to learn more about Sunshine Acres and our Goldendoodles, talk with some of our Doodle owners on the online forums such as www.goldendoodles.com.  We welcome visits by appointment.  Our website also has many testimonials listed from our Goldendoodle puppies owners (see link above).  We are glad to answer any questions you have about our Goldendoodle puppies, or the Goldendoodle breed, not only when you are purchasing a puppy but years afterward as well.

It has been very rewarding to now have many repeat customers as well as customer’s referrals coming to purchase their newest “Best Friend”-a Goldendoodle- from Sunshine Acres. While our puppies are delighted to fill this role of best friend and companion to their families, we also have many of Sunshine Acre’s Goldendoodles filling different roles as they work in search and rescue or as service, therapy or assistance dogs.  Michael and Grover (our Goldendoodle who is a certified Pet Partner with Michael) enjoy doing Animal Assisted Activity work together at our local nursing home.

For current issues or trends in the Goldendoodle world, you might peruse the Sunshine Acres blog to catch up on articles written specifically to clarify or bring to your attention information that can be useful.

  • Gracie is doing great!!! I can’t believe she is 7 months old already. The last time we weighed her she was around 31 pounds. She finished a puppy class in November and starts obedient training tonight. She loves to play!! We have to watch our socks though!! All bedroom and closet doors have to be closed or she will sneak one and swallow them whole!! She has gotten a couple but thankfully it didn’t lead to any serious complications. We still have hopes to train her as a therapy dog. Mike and I were just commenting last night what a good puppy she has been. Our last puppy wasn’t allowed to sleep in our room at this age because she would chew on the furniture but Gracie sleeps with us every night and behaves herself!

She is my shadow! I think her and I bonded because I was the one that was with her everyday when we first bought her home!! When I leave for work at night Mike makes sure she sees me leave because he said if not, she goes and searches the house for me.

If you scroll down I have added a couple of pictures. They were in my phone and for some reason it wouldn’t let me attach a picture so I had to send it to myself and forward them to you. Thanks again for helping us pick the right puppy for us! Gracie is exactly what I had pictured in my mind!! We just all love her to pieces!!

  • Please read our reviews on Facebook.  We work hard to raise some very good puppies and are thankful when the people who take them home turn them into very good dogs.  Not every story is a 100% success story and none succeed without effort, but all Goldendoodles are living animals.  If the story of your dog’s life is not going where you want it to be, you can be the author and explore ways to amend or improve your dog’s story.

There are many people who follow our page that can help provide insightful advice, practical experience, and a helping hand.  Just ask.  Don’t feel that just because your dog is not a Goldendoodle or from Sunshine Acres to participate.

Of course, what we “like” the best are your happy reviews and wonderful pictures of our puppies that turned into your dogs :))

Our goldendoodle puppy (Riley) is unbelievable…the perfect dog!!!!  Riley is just 14 months old; he has a golden colored coat, a great personality (everyone in our neighborhood knows him), etc. etc.  Sunshine Acres and Michael more than delivered as promised and I do not hesitate in recommending him.

  • I don’t even know where to begin how happy we are with our Irish Goldendoodle puppy (Sunset & Rufus) we named him Hank O’Doodle.  He is so smart, he sits, stays and walks on a leash very well for only 10 weeks old. Hank is doing so good with his potty training too, he goes in his section of the yard only.  He is so good!! We love him so much and kiss him often. Do you know how big he will get? I have friends that say he will be about 60lbs (I hope he gets big). I have attached a few pics of Hank with my granddaughter and one of him after his bath and blow dry.

Thank you again so much for breeding these beautiful, smart puppies! I will keep you updated with more pics.

  • We adore our puppy which we named Lakota.  Even non-dog lover’s fall in love with him.  He does not get into any trouble in the house when left alone and he loves all people and animals.  His disposition is excellent!

  • Arial is home and asleep in her crate.  What an amazing beautiful puppy!  She’s a little doll and I can’t get over how well she took the flight and how sweet she is!! She ate, went potty and settled right down.  I will stay in touch and send pictures.  I only hope I can breed puppies that are as adorable as she is.

Hi Michael! Just wanted to send you the latest picture of Dash.  We just love him.  He’s a little spitfire full of spunk and personality.  Everyone comments how gorgeous he is. Thanks for everything!

  • Attached please find the certificate of sterility that our vet
provided after spaying Maisey at the beginning of July. My
recollection is that you offered a $200 refund if we decided to have
    her spayed.

Just so you know, Maisey has proven to be a delightful, energetic,
well adjusted puppy. We certainly have our hands full with her and two  small kids, but the kids love her and she has burrowed her way into  our hearts.

We’ll be sure to keep in touch and provide pictures as she grows up.

  • Our dog “Sully” is a Irish Golden, you sent him to us in Rochester NY in October, 2010.  He is an absolutely wonderful dog, everything you promised and more.  He is healthy, and beautiful, skin, coat, hips heart+++! He gets along wonderfully with our 6 year old and our small dog. He goes to work with me every day at the animal shelter and loves all the students in my classes.  He was easy to house/crate train and has passed basic obedience.  He has a wonderful temperament, gentle and laid back.  Everyone is amazed at how low key he is for a young sporting dog mix!  Thank You for your dedication to this wonderful hybrid.  Working at a shelter for the past 13 years I get to see the horrific results of bad breeding practices particularly for pit bulls.  Please continue your positive work for these wonderful dogs!  (And Sully is neutered, I will leave the breeding to the experts!)

    Thanks Again  for Everything,

  • He is adorable. You can tell he has been around little boys because the first thing he did was climb into my sons lap. It made Matthew’s day!! Koda looked scared but warmed up in no time.

Happy New Year, Michael!  Thought you might want an Emmy update…she’s doing beautifully!  Gibbs LOVES her.  They are best buddies and play constantly which is exactly what we had hoped would happen.

  • I thought you might like an update/pictures of Copper.  In case you forgot, he was from Carrie and Jackson’s litter last May.  Copper is doing great!  He is a little smaller than we were hoping – 46 pounds – but we love him just the same!  He loves playing with the kids and could not have a better temperament!  My 3 yr old has been known to take a bone right out of his mouth without so much as a growl from Copper!  He also does not shed AT ALL!  I have been in touch with a few of the owner’s of Copper’s siblings via the “doodle forum” and we love to compare pictures of your beautiful puppies!

  • Michael,

Bryan and I wanted to give you an update on our girl, Liberty .  But mostly, we wanted to thank-you!  Liberty has brought us such joy!!

She’ll be 6 months old next week and she’s doing great.  Liberty is so smart and she’s the hit of the neighborhood, training class and vet’s office (in other words, she’s spoiled rotten!).  We get questions and comments all the time.  Everyone loves her coat, especially the color.

We just had her groomed to give her some relief for the summer.  I’ve attached a picture of her at the lake a few weeks ago.  She’s really beginning to enjoy the water!

    Take care,

  • The dog made it to Philly okay. When we went to pick him up and he was certainly shaken, but we plopped right down on the airport floor and snuggled with him and he began feeling better. He got sick once on the car trip home, but didn’t seem too phased. We brought him in and gave him some water. It was very sad to see him at first. He backed up against a wall in the kitchen and just looked around. I could just image what he was thinking. Where are my brothers? Where’s my Mom and Dad and all the others I’m used to. This does not look like my home. I put a fleece blanket in his crate and he took a short nap.

Then we brought him out and let him run around. I could almost hear him when he smelled the grass and snow: ‘Hey I know what this is!” He and Myles ran around and played. So far today he hasn’t had one accident inside. Although I take him out regularly, especially after he eats or drinks. He ate a good supper and has seemed to settle in quite nicely by the end of the day. He even had a small fight with a trained attack leaf; it was a tie. But he didn’t seem to mind; he enjoyed the completion. He’s napping now.

I found out from my sister-in-law that my husband always used to say every dog needs a boy.  Attached are pictures from this afternoon of Strider (we named in the car ride home) and his boy Myles.

Thank you for allowing us to adopt such a wonderful new member in our family!

  • His coat is quite curly, but is very soft and hasn’t shown any tendency to matt yet.  The coloration remains golden red with cream highlights.  His gait is very nice and his looks get frequent compliments on walks.

Temperament wise he bonded to us quickly and is very affectionate.  He appears intelligent and loves retrieving.  House training is going well.

  • I am sending you a picture of our dog. He is now 6 months old. He has been a real pleasure and fits right in with our family. He is also a very smart dog. He has been #1 in his classes. I have also taught him how to go up a ladder and down a slide.

  • We wanted to send you a note to update you on Charlie, a puppy we adopted from your family.  When we brought Charlie home in October 2010, we had no idea how much joy he would bring to our everyday lives.  He’s the best puppy – energetic, snuggly and good natured.  We take him to our local park daily and haven’t spent a day there without receiving compliments on Charlie’s entertaining behavior or good looks.  Charlie loves birds, squirrels, squeaky toys and running as fast as he can.  He’s incredibly athletic and can keep up with any dog he meets.

Charlie grew very quickly – he’s long and slender, but very muscular.  The vet tells us he will top out around 45 or 50 pounds, which is just perfect.  He did quite well when he was neutered, though he wasn’t a fan of the plastic cone we had him wear for a few days afterward!!  We came home after work one day to find it in shreds outside of his crate.  He really showed that plastic cone who’s the boss!!

We hope the spring is treating you well – looking forward to the summer!

  • But, just to tell you about Lucy.  She is doing quite well.  I think our dog trainer seems to think she would be a great agility dog.  Lucy is the youngest dog in her class, but everything is easy for her.  She’s very smart, picks up on things very quickly and willingly.  She loves to please.  She’s a very good girl.

  • Hi- We absolutely love our little girl. She is soooo funny. Zoe is finally getting along with her. Kalli is house broken and can sit and come when called. She loves to play ball. And I take her everywhere with me. She is going to our church retreat next weekend!  I just visited the website and I am glad all the puppies are spoken for. I fell in love with the chocolate ones-especially the phantom one. I know we will get another one at some time.

  • She has had her last shots and today we found her playing with her tooth on the floor!  She has gotten quite a few permanent teeth in by now.  Dr. Murphy and everyone at Broad Ripple Animal Clinic are in love with her and want me to just bring her in whenever I’d like.  In fact, Dr. Murphy is considering one of your doodles as she recently lost one of her dogs.

  • We just wanted to say MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and your family.  We also wanted you to know that our puppy, Rusty, is such a blessing to our family.  He is so smart!  Everyone comments on how beautiful he is.  We have been complimented by our vet, groomer and kennel on how well behaved he is and how smart he is.  They all made sure we knew that in general,

doodles are all over the map.  But thanks to your responsible breeding program, we have a wonderful companion.  We want you to know how grateful we are.  Thank you.

    Christmas blessings to you all.

  • He is soooooo ADORABLE! His plane was a little delayed but we finally got him at 10:30 .  We thought he would be timid and so obviously scared at first but boy we were wrong.  He had PLAY on his mind and so we did for a while before we left the airport. He loves to give kisses. He is exactly the spunky little pooch we wanted.  Also, he REALLY likes my husband and I couldn’t help but wonder if it is because he is used to a male taking care of him–I don’t know but my husband loves it…  Well, we LOVE him and his cute little personality so THANKS SO MUCH!

  • We’ll be in your area on 5/7 or 5/9 and thought you

  • He is so calm and gentle most of the time (especially compared to the neighbor’s Bichon puppy). He seems to get a little wound up around the boys so we are working on the nipping/jumping (still nothing compared to the Bichon). The neighbors, including the ones that are petrified of dogs were really surprised by his demeanor and love him too.

Most importantly, my husband, skeptical that a dog with any part poodle was a bad choice, is convinced that he’s the smartest dog he’s ever seen.

  • Hope all’s well – here are a few pics of Reagan on her first birthday, and her first round of golf!  She has been a great dog – learns very fast and is super friendly – only negatives are that most everyone that sees her wants to know everything about her( I may have business card made for her) , and that she has learned that she can swim with her back feet on the bottom, kind of a walking swim, but just need to find a deeper lake.  She retrieves very well, catches frisbee, and is learning to high jump.

Well Ginger’s 7 months old already. She’s a very good puppy and listens well.  We went to Minocqua , Wisconsin . She just loved the water and playing with the kids.  When we returned, she went to the groomer. Here’s some updated pictures of her.

    She’s truly adorable.

  • Bear was perfect on the ride home. He lap traveled spreading his love. He was a little shy coming in the house. I am sure we will miss the little shy moments because he quickly became a hoot. Loving his toys and playing. He already has a favorite yellow chicken that he actually retrieved for us. We are in love.

Thank you for our new addition.

  • He’s such a sweet, mellow dog – I’ve been taking him pretty much everywhere with me – bike races, friends’ houses, etc. and he always just goes with the flow and adapts to the situation.  He pretty much slept through the night from day one and learned sit the second time I tried with him. Definitely a smarty-pants.

Thanks so much – I’m so glad to have him in my life!!

  • She did very well!! She can do about a 15-20 minute down-stay with very few corrections. She sits on command and does Down on command.  We worked on her jumping problem and she is almost broken of that.  We have been working on controlled walking and heel lately.  She is so smart.  The only thing I am having a hard time with is Come.  But I’m told that is one of the last commands puppies learn so that we are in pretty good shape.

Thanks for your interest!!  She is doing great!!!!!!!!!

  • Dear MIke;

We got Daisy from you last July.  She is just the best dog ever. Very fun loving and active.  Gets along well with people. Loves to play. Wonderful temperment. At the same time she is a good watchdog too!  Best dog I have ever owned. I bring her to my office all the time and she is well behaved, smart and was easy to train.

Would highly recommend you and the goldendoodle to anyone.

  • Hi Michael & Family,

I just want you to know that TJ is doing really well!  He is a little over 4 months, and weighs about 25 lbs.  He is growing right before our eyes, and everyone thinks THEY are his favorite because he gives so much affection.  He is pretty well crate trained and is eating twice a day.  He had the nicest temperament, always friendly and playful if someone is available, but otherwise quiet and calm when it is appropriate.  He seems to be capable of transitioning from playful to calm very easily.  And he just met the Weirenga’s dog Mattie a couple of weeks ago and Mattie tried to make TJ know that she was in charge but after awhile the tables turned and TJ was running the show, and ultimately they played together so nicely.  They were acting just like each other, batting each other with their big paws, and laying on their backs with total trust for the other dog, chasing each other.  It was awesome!   TJ also likes to play with a friends border collie and won over a friend’s giant schnauzer who at first definitely wanted to be in charge, growling and bared teeth and all, but all of the sudden, gave in and let TJ jump and play with him.   Can you tell we’re happy with him?  Also, are there any of your dogs and/or TJ’s siblings that might’ve come to live anywhere reasonably near us?

  • Hope you enjoy these pictures of our puppy, who we have named Colby.  It is really amazing how quickly he has worked his way into our hearts.

He’s growing quickly and checked out great at his vet visit.  He slept through the entire exam, including when she clipped his nails.  He raised his head and glanced at her once while she took his temperature.

  • We want to thank you for the wonderful puppy. He had a good trip last night without any problems. He slept most of the night. He loves the children very much. They took Jesse for a short walk this morning and they had a good time. Jesse is a very good puppy and he is, I can say, trained. He barked this morning to go outside. The children are very excited. And again, Thank you.

  • My husband and I purchased Kami (your given name to her) from you on 12/11/09.  Kami is such a wonderful dog!  We bring her everywhere with us because her disposition and temperament are phenomenal!  While we were taking her to dog obedient training classes, we had so many people telling us she should be a therapy dog.  Therefore, we took Kami to take the Canine Good Citizen test, which she passed with flying colors, and we are in the process of being assessed to be a member of the Delta Society (a non-profit organization dedicated to improving human health through service and therapy animals).

Please reimburse us the $100.00 for Kami passing the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test.  You can certainly post the attached pictures of Kami and this testimonial as to the quality of your breeding.

Thank you so much for our wonderful dog!!

  • I just wanted to say that the puppy is doing wonderful in her new home!

She is so cute and she has not shed a bit! She has adjusted well and we are enjoying her immensely! Everyone has fallen in love with her and has wanted the place where I got her; so if you get a lot of requests from the southeast, don’t be surprised!

  • I purchased Rusty from you in September 2005.  I asked you to pick me a dog that would be calm and had a friendly disposition.  You did!  Rusty is the best dog ever.  He is a celebrity in our neighborhood.  The best mannered, best looking, most friendly, and the dog everybody wants to pet. He has brought so much joy to our family and is my best friend.  He follows me everywhere and I take him when I run all my errands on Saturdays.  Stores are disappointed when he is NOT with me.  Everyone who meets Rusty says the same thing.  What a beautiful dog, so well behaved and friendly.

His health is excellent. Rusty weighs 75 lbs. and eats a can of peas or green beans with 1 cup kibble twice a day.   He gets moderate exercise and loves to play fetch.  His favorite past time is chasing squirrels, or chewing sticks.  I notice you have smaller doodles on your web site.  Do you still breed the big ones like Rusty?

I cannot thank you enough for breeding such a GREAT dog!  I am 5 years from retirement; we will buy another Golden Doodle then from you I hope!  Please share these pictures on your web site.  Rusty is just the best golden doodle anyone has ever seen.

    I hope you are well.

  • Ruby is doing just great.  She is very well known all over town.  She weighs about 60 pounds now.  She is one big mush.  Anyway, got together with Daisy, her sister at the beach 2 weeks ago.  They had a ball running all over the place.  You should have several pictures attached to this message.  Just click on the forward arrows at the bottom of the screen.  If you don’t have it, I’ll send re-send them to you.  Daisy is getting her hair cut on Monday.  Bill is now using our groomer, who loves Ruby.

  • Hi, Just a follow up about our little girl…who is now 47 pounds and still adorable…She continues to be a delight in our life, happy, healthy, and a lot of energy. She loves watching birds without doing anything about it — just watching in total silence; stalking chipmunks and squirrels in slow motion can keep her entertained for hours. Easy to train, she loves the clicker, and the fact that she isn’t doing amazing tricks has to do with the laid back nature of her owners, not her own ability to learn anything.

Again, we thank you so much for Amanda who just turned 7 months.

  • Michael,

I hope you are doing well.  I have attached our receipt from the vet as proof that we had our puppy, Darcy, spayed last month.  Our address is still the same for the check for reimbursement – ****, Chicago IL 60614.

Darcy is doing great!  We continue to get compliments on her unique coat color and on her sweet disposition while walking around the neighborhood.  She has been a great learner and eager to please on the training.  It is hard to remember life before we brought her home!

I’ve attached a few pictures so you can see how she’s grown.

  • Merry Christmas and Happy New Year…..hope you and your family had wonderful holiday.  Sorry it has taken me so long to get you some pictures of Izzo.  He has been a wonderful addition to our family and brings us nothing but joy.  He was so very easy to potty train and has the best temperament.  Everywhere we take him people ask us where we got him and what kind of dog he is…..people think he looks like a stuffed animal.  All of our friend tell us we won the dog lottery with this one!  We cannot imagine life without him…..Thank you!

  • Hi Michael!

I just had a message from Mater’s groomer, Kathie at Platinum Paws, and one of her other clients wanted to know who Mater’s breeder was.  I sent the info, so I hope they call!  I told them Sam looks much like Mater did at that age.

We can’t even begin to tell you what a special dog Mater has turned out to be.  He is very active volunteering with Paws and Think, Inc,.  He’s registered with Delta Society, but P&T keeps him pretty busy.  (They even put his picture on bottles of Mater Merlot for a wine-tasting fundraiser and they sold out!) Tom has taken him through testing now as well, and they visit the VA hospital downtown.  Everyone LOVES Mater!  I take him several other places – adult day care, children’s grief support, and Paws to Read.  It seems wherever we go now someone will ask us if that is Mater!  He’s become a local celebrity of sorts!  He has a great personality and a joy in life that is so very special.  We can’t thank you enough for this wonderful guy!

My daughter took some wonderful photos of him that you might want to post.  I’ll attach my favorites.

Kathy & Tom, and Mater of course!

  • Hello Michael.  I purchased an Irish Golden Doodle from you last summer.  Her identification is Tess 072.  She is now all grown up, beautiful and much loved.  We named her Chelsea after a borough in London where I was born and raised.  I thought that was an appropriate name for her because it is a very diversified and colorful place to live, reminds me of Chelsea with her multi heritage and beautiful red coat.  I have attached her Canine Good Citizen Certificate for which I understand I will get a $100 refund.

I hope all is well with you.

  • Goldendoodle in Wisconsin

I hope that this December finds you well.  Today, December 14th, is the first birthday of the Irish Goldendoodle known in your records as “Sally”, but who became “Sophie” when she arrived at our home in Wisconsin.   When we were searching for a puppy, there were a couple of things that stood out to us about your business – First, the easily understood explanations of the genetics involved that can be found on your web site.  Secondly, the beauty of the animals themselves.

Another thing that stuck in my mind, though, was the testimonial letter from a lawyer (Maggie in Iowa).  Being a lawyer myself, I made a mental note to send you a testimonial myself on Sophie’s first birthday, just to let you know how she’s doing.

She is absolutely delightful!  I work from home and she is with me most of the day.  Due to some unfortunate circumstances, we weren’t able to do formal training this past summer as we had planned, but she has responded wonderfully to training with me here at home – which we attribute all to her being so smart.   She knows: come, sit, lie down, up, off and sit (for use if she is up on something), stay, pen (for sending her to her kennel), car (as in “get in the”), go in/out (of the house), go potty, go poopy and heel.  She also responds to hand signals for sit, lie down and stay.   She responds to a finger snap and point when you want her to come.  She responds to a soft whistle.  When I get dressed to go to court, she knows I’m going and goes directly to her kennel and lies down on her own.   We have a crushed gravel path around our property, and she respects that as her “fence”.  If she should go a little past it, the command “path!” sends her back inside the perimeter.  This is one very smart dog.

She is litter box trained.  In the morning and early evening, I take her out to the garage, where she does what is needed.   It is so nice not to have to walk a dog outside in our often questionable Wisconsin weather.   Solids are scooped up and disposed of in the toilet.  The dog litter deals with the liquids and we clean out the box once or twice per week, as needed.   We installed a dog door in the door between the house and the garage so she can go out on her own, but she discovered that she needed a human present in order to be acknowledged for her accomplishments, so she comes and gets one of us to personally witness the feat.

As is often mentioned by others on your site, the coat is unbelievably soft.  After people comment on her beautiful color, the next thing they mention is how soft she is.  She doesn’t have that “dog smell”, and doesn’t need to be bathed nearly as often as we might have expected.

She has grown to 65 pounds and appears to be staying there.   She is completely healthy and happy.  She is a celebrity at the vet’s office, where the staff just loves her color, her soft coat and her delightful behavior.  (They tell me that she’s actually very well trained for a 1 year old, so I must be doing something right…)

She loves to play with the kids, and comes into my office to enforce break times when she decides I’ve been sitting at the computer too long.   She will chase a ball endlessly and loves to race and be chased around.

Before our purchase, we asked you about concerns that the Irish Setter component might make for a high-strung dog.  You assured us that the Irish grandparent worked as a therapy dog and that you wouldn’t breed the Irish Goldendoodle if they weren’t wonderful dogs.   Sophie has done you proud.  She is as gentle as can be.  If one is concerned about something she is eating, you can open her mouth to get it out, even if it’s her favorite food.  She complies with the vet poking and prodding her in examinations.  She rolls with all the “loving” that little kids can dish out.   She is always pleasant and affectionate.  She warns us about people approaching the house but, once introduced, she is everybody’s best friend.   From the beginning, I have taken her with me to pick up the kids from school, and she is loved by all the children – not to mention the teachers and other parents.

Sure – she’s only a year, and gets a bit less, shall we say, “compliant” with commands when new friends or other dogs appear, but she is learning more and more with each day.  We hope to get enrolled in a formal class this spring.

My wife was not a dog person.  She really had to be sold on the idea of buying a dog, something our kids actually did do by means of repeated PowerPoint presentations  (long before the recent Microsoft commercials came out showing a kid doing the same thing).  Now, Karen is Sophie’s biggest fan.  It is impossible not to love this dog.

Sophie is a wonderful and beautiful dog.  She is a member of the family (picture attached) and it is hard to believe there was ever a time when she wasn’t here.   Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful animal.  It was truly a pleasure doing business with you, and we are grateful every day that we have her here in our home.  We would recommend you and your animals to anyone.

  • Hi Michael,

Sherman is now in Hong Kong.   He is relaxing on the kitchen floor with his “blankie”, that Beth sent, and a chew toy.   Grant is reading him a story.   The process at the airport went smoothly…Sherman was a well behaved boy.   At one point they take them out of the carte to inspect them and then they are expected to go back into the crate (they cannot leave the airport without being crated).   Sherman went back into his crate without any issue…good boy Sherman.

We have been smothering him with hugs and kisses…and he has won our hearts already.   Thanks again for everything…Sherman sends his kisses.
